AWA provides current and incoming BridgeUSA J-1 Summer Work Travel exchange visitors with detailed guidance covering insurance, taxes, Social Security, safety, cultural exchange, and your program obligations. Once accepted into the program, you'll receive access to the AWA participant portal, where this information is available in full.

Topics covered in the portal include: medical insurance and how to file a claim; your U.S. tax obligations and the W-4 form; how to apply for a Social Security number; safety and wellness guidance, including emergency contacts and trafficking awareness resources; tips for making the most of your cultural exchange experience; a checklist of key program obligations and deadlines; and answers to frequently asked questions.

The following are required by U.S. Department of State Exchange Visitor Program regulations. Full detail is available in the participant portal.

  • Within 10 days of arrival: notify AWA that you've arrived in the U.S.
  • Within 10 days of securing housing: notify AWA of your U.S. residence address
  • Before starting work: confirm AWA has verified and approved your host employer
  • Every month: respond to AWA's monthly check-in
  • Anytime something changes: notify AWA immediately of any change in address or employment
  • Throughout your program: maintain valid exchange visitor status and participate in cultural exchange activities
  • Before your program ends: plan your departure on or before your DS-2019 end date, or within your 30-day grace period

Failure to meet these obligations may result in SEVIS termination, which can affect your legal status in the United States. When in doubt, contact AWA before taking any action.

The BridgeUSA Summer Work Travel Program is a cultural exchange experience first, work second. The most memorable programs are the ones where exchange visitors get out and engage: explore your host community, attend local events, travel during your days off, and build genuine friendships with the Americans you meet.

Just as importantly, cultural exchange goes both ways. Share your language, food, traditions, and perspective with your coworkers, host community, and the friends you make. It's one of the most meaningful parts of the program for everyone involved, and active participation in cultural exchange activities is a requirement of BridgeUSA, not an optional extra.
